About Us
We are both Chartered Behavioural Psychologists of the Psychological Society of Ireland and are longstanding colleagues with over 40 years of experience between us.
We are also both mums & with that comes an empathy, drive & passion to support & empower families, schools & service providers by way of increasing their knowledge of factors affecting behaviour & ways to work towards positive changes.
We provide person-centred, client-focussed, friendly, collaborative, holistic, evidenced-based, best-practice supports & services to families, schools & other service providers, where the concern is to do with an aspect of a person’s behaviour. For example, the person maybe acting out physically, becoming verbally dysregulated, engaging in self-injurious, struggling to focus on tasks etc.
We provide support both where the person has a diagnosis or additional need & also where that is not the case.
Anyone can contact us directly to find out more about our supports & services and you do not need a referral.
The framework that we use to understand & support is called Positive Behaviour Support, which is the approach named in both in Irish legislation & internationally.
The focus of this approach is not on working directly with, or trying to persuade the child/person to change their behaviour, it is rather on identifying & focusing directly on the underlying root causes & increasing quality of life.
When root causes are clearer, strategies will be developed collaboratively together with the main people in the person’s life, for example: the person, family, school, OT, SALT, other service provider etc. Strategies developed link directly to the root causes. For example, tweaking aspects of the person’s environment, changing our interactional style & approach, carefully rearranging where a less preferred task is placed in the schedule, celebrating tiny incremental achievements, helping the person to learn some new skills etc.
When we get this right, engagement in the behaviour of concern will by default become less intense & less frequent because their needs are now being met.
